🐑 🧶Ty Seren have been processing raw wool in

🐑 🧶Ty Seren have been processing raw wool into usable yarn. They started by washing the raw wool to remove dirt and oils, then experimented with natural dyes to colour the wool. Turmeric created a vibrant yellow and beetroot a soft pink. They carded the wool to achieve a consistent and fluffy texture, then mastered spinning with diy drop spindles, blending and spinning together colours achieving a variety of effects. Finally they wove their work into small wall hangings.

Handwork is a core part of the Steiner curriculum right through from Early Years to Upper School. Making things that are both beautiful and useful, builds not only skills and competence – but self-confidence, perseverance, patience, focus, creativity, and resourcefulness. It develops a ‘can-do’ attitude – students know how things are made because they make them themselves.

🏺🏛️🏺🌿🔱 Greek Mythology – from Myth to History. Ty Haul are immersed in the rich and timeless world of Greek Mythology.

Class 5 is a pivotal year in the Steiner curriculum. Children find themselves at a point of dynamic balance between the earlier years of their childhood and the near-future of adolescence. They have new capacities for thought and reflection, a dynamic interest in the world, and an emerging sense of personal and social responsibility.

The curriculum meets them by moving into the borderland between mythology and history proper. One of the main themes for the year is ancient histories, moving through great cultures of the ancient world - from the dawn of pre-history through India, Persia, Babylon and Egypt, leading up to ancient Greece.

They start the year hearing stories from the world of mythology that have lived in the oral traditions of their people, but by year-end will move into the realm of actual history. Greece is the pivot point for this.

The Greek Myths allow students to immerse themselves in the rich and timeless stories of gods, heroes, and epic adventures that have shaped culture and imagination for centuries. These can have particular resonance for students this age - overcoming difficulties in the world without too much help from the gods (/parents/teachers), a sense of standing on your own two feet and a striving to be fair, honourable and just in all aspects of life.

Yet in the myths real locations are mixed with mythological characters. The Iliad tells of the Trojan War with Achilles, Odysseus and Helen of Troy. We can follow their travels from Sparta in Greece to Troy in Modern day Turkey. Just as mythology and history are mixed so do the gods mix with humans, Zeus has many mortal children said to be the ancestors of known rulers.

And from here the study of ‘real’ history begins, with Athens and Sparta and their struggles with each other and Persia. Students begins to explore the impact of individuals, Socrates and Aristotle, and the focus in the classroom shifts more to individual academic work with growing emphasis on personal responsibility.

✖️➗➕➖ Ty Crisial Maths - The concept of 'Whole to Parts' is rooted deeply in Waldorf education, not just in maths but across the curriculum. Put simply, we first present the whole of something and then break it into parts.

The number 12, for instance, doesn't stand alone, many things come together to make up 12, and 12 is also a component of many other larger parts. 12 can be 6 X 2, it can be 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2, it can be 4 X 3. The concept of putting the whole before the parts is based on HOW the child learns the basic concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is important they are able to view the whole of the concept before they break it into computational parts.

Similarly in Botany, later in the curriculum, to learn about a plant we don't simply pick the plant and bring it to the classroom and look at it. We go to where the plant is. Look at the earth around the plant. Look at the skies over the plant. Look at the water that comes to the plant. Look at everything that makes the conditions for that plant to live and thrive first. From that wholeness, the child can come into observation, curiosity and reverence for the plant itself.

☯ ☽ ◑ ● ◐ ☾ ☯ Ty Haul have begun their explorations in charcoal drawing. The introduction of black and white drawing around age 11/12 is done with great purpose and intention in Waldorf schools.

As Tomas Wildgruber, Waldorf teacher and author, says - “To put aside watercolour paintings for a while, with their more naïve pictorial experience, and to work instead with nuances of light and shade between black and white, is a way of coming to meet pupils’ violently fluctuating soul life at this age.”

In adolescence students are on their own journey, both internal and external. The inner struggle to understand how and why the body is changing is contrasted by the outer struggle to find their place socially. The child is thrust into a world of polarity.

There may be no better way to meet this moment in their development than to introduce the polarities of black and white drawing, along with the multitude of greys that come with studying the nuances of light and dark.

Art is woven into every aspect of the Waldorf curriculum. Whether in history, science or maths, students are continuously learning through artistic skills and expression - art is a mechanism used to explore, study, and understand all subjects.

As adolescence begins the child moves away the use colour as imaginative illustrations of the stories they hear, into a world of realism and perspective. The curriculum moves towards the fall of Rome and the study light and its properties in Physics where students are encouraged to look at the world as infinite expressions of light and dark.

Charcoal is the perfect medium to deepen one’s study of light. Students need to observe light and how it travels, reflects, bounces, and highlights an object, and how the lack of light creates shadow and depth. Drawing light and darkness in an accurate, beautiful way requires the understanding of light itself.

By learning to see light and shadow and positive/negative space, elements of realism and depth begin to emerge.
